Cheap Flight Tactics |
|
|

Some strategies to help you get the lowest
airfares to Europe |
|
CHEAP FLIGHT FROM HOUSTON TO LEEDS |
Consolidator
fares
Basically, they're bulk tickets sold to travel agencies, with
savings passed on to the consumer. Example: Baltimore to Copenhagen in
July regular airfare $1100-1200; consolidator fare $740-880.Go to
tiss or
travelhub |

Low-cost airlines
Some airlines, like Icelandair, Citybird, Virgin Atlantic, LTU, and
Martinair can almost always be counted on to have the lowest fares, or at
least as low as the big-airlines' sale fares. There are exceptions,
especially in summer, when the low-cost airlines work the law of supply
and demand just like everyone else, and their fares are sometimes higher.
You won't know for sure unless you check with them yourself.
Routes,
contact numbers and web site addresses for these airlines are here. |

Consider when
you are going
Airlines base their fares on a hi-low system which means high
season is in the summer when MOST people travel, then comes fall shoulder
season and then winter season is from Nov 1 to march 31 (except for the
week before & after Christmas). Lowest fares means lowest amount of
travelers. If you're going stand-by you'll have more chance of getting
on in Late September/ October (but not to Germany), November, mid January
thru Mid March. Try to go Mon-Thurs, as weekends are more full |

Courier
flights
Least flexible. Sometimes not much less than the best price you
could come up with otherwise. Can't check luggage--only carry-ons. No
guarantees flight you want will be available. More
info here. |

Airhitch
Not quite hitching but the next best thing! Once you register with
Airhitch they will try and get you a flight on a space available basis
from a list of US and Canadian airports close to you. You have to be
flexible about which airport you fly from, where you end up and the day
you fly. You specify a time period during which you want to fly out, which
must be a minimum period of between 5 and 8 days (depending on the season).
Airhitch matches you with an empty airline seat and you´re off! Read what
some Eurotrip
readers´
experiences were with Airhitch. |

Airline Links

flight from houston to leeds or phone numbers mentioned, go to
It also gives you an overview of which cities are served by each airline.

Airline sales
Occasionally airlines put their tickets on sale. Sometimes, these
can be lower than consolidator fares. The best place I believe to stay on
top of all of the Airline Specials, etc. has got to Although one can
subscribe, there's a lot of free content for non-subscribers, such as the
daily-updated airfare specials from most, if not all, airlines. Once the
bestfares page has loaded, click News or Airfare specials in the left
column.Other ways to keep up-to date are to check
Microsoft's Expedia and
Arthur Frommer's daily on-line magazine
as well as the airlines' own websites. To find airlines' web sites and
phone numbers. |

Charters
This one is riskiest, because if the plane doesn't fill, then the
tour company or travel agency could cancel it, leaving you stranded.
Although this is less likely with fairly-recent US laws, it could still
happen. The best luck I've ever had finding charter companies is doing a
simple web-search for "Charter airfare" or similar terms using
Metacrawler.Another source is
Consumer Reports Travel Letter, which usually does an article on charters
in the Spring every year (check your library). Charters are not always
cheaper! For charters to France, try

| |
Travel Agent You
should check with a travel agent just to see if they can beat a low-fare.
Some charter and tour companies will deal only with agents and not the
general public, anyway.
Of course if you can't be bothered with all the above the travel agent
is the only way! A good travel agent can offer you advice and might
suggest destinations or alternatives you've not thought about. |
