Low-cost airlines
Some airlines, like Icelandair, Citybird, Virgin Atlantic, LTU, and
Martinair can almost always be counted on to have the lowest fares, or at
least as low as the big-airlines' sale fares. There are exceptions,
especially in summer, when the low-cost airlines work the law of supply
and demand just like everyone else, and their fares are sometimes higher.
You won't know for sure unless you check with them yourself.

season is in the summer when MOST people travel, then comes fall shoulder
season and then winter season is from Nov 1 to march 31 (except for the
week before & after Christmas). Lowest fares means lowest amount of
travelers.
If you're going stand-by you'll have more chance of getting on in Late
September/ October (but not to Germany), November, mid January thru Mid
March. Try to go Mon-Thurs, as weekends are more full
